Happy New Year!

I hope that you had a wonderful 2017 and are excited about an even better 2018! I want to take a moment to talk about New Year resolutions and how they always fail because they are not based in measurable attainable thought. They are just listed or stated and then off into life you go! Right? Every January, most people have Health somewhere at the top of their list to improve. One of the most left out parts of the health equation is self care.

What is the self care that I am addressing today? It is the part least considered when one ponders “self care.” Usually, it is thought of diet, working out, sleeping more, and work less hours take a longer vacation, etc. These are great and most are important. However; What about stress, muscle tension and even physical aches and pains? What do you do to manage these areas? Do you do anything at all?

Did you know that by addressing stress, tension and nagging physical pain you will naturally begin to get more energy, sleep more restfully and have fewer headaches? Take a moment to check in with yourself:

• Do you wake up in the morning sore or stiff?

• Does your low back ache throughout the day or while sitting long periods of time?

• Do you feel stress and tension even pain in your mid back, neck and shoulders?

• How frequently do you get headaches and how long do they last? How Severe?

• Do you grind your teeth or clinch your jaw?

• Do your hips get tight and achy?

If you experience any of these symptoms, I can help you! I have 5 openings this month for a free consultation. We will discuss your physical issues, daily activities, work and anything else that may be attributing to your discomfort. Consultations are about 30 minutes.

These 5 openings are for those whom are serious about making a commitment to self care. If you know someone whom has been looking for solutions to their discomfort or pain – Please share this! Let’s make 2018 about being pain free!

These openings will fill quickly!

Introduction - What is a Muscle Knot?

Posted by [email protected] on May 6, 2017 at 5:40 PM Comments comments (0)

As a deep tissue myofascial therapist, I am asked often “what is a knot?” I have to say, I have not always answered well or with clarity as I have struggled to explain the phenomenon with ease and in terms one can understand on the fly. I decided to write an article to better articulate the answer.

This is my first ever written article, so I hope I do well in being interesting as well as informative. Before I get started into the topic, I would like to take time to express my gratitude to each and every one of you that have entrusted me to help you feel better; to heal, to de-stress, and to get back to activities you had stopped doing as a result of your physical discomfort. For whatever the reason that brought you to Thera-Med Massage; I am grateful! I truly love my work and I am always the most happy when I have been an active part of helping a client meet their health goals.

There are many parts of the whole in terms of health goals and massage is just one part. It is however; not just luxury; there are real health benefits and attributes that impact not just the body, but our mental, emotional and spiritual parts of self. When we work together here at Thera-Med Massage, the whole is acknowledged, not just a part and that is one of the many aspects of my approach that separate Thera-Med Massage from the rest. This is not a practice of gimmicks and sale pitches; it is a practice of care, compassion and full intention of health and healing. It is the goal to have affordable treatment plans and packages so that the desired result of your goal here is met.

Without further a due, let’s get into the conversation of muscle knots.

What are knots in the muscle?

Knots in the muscle or fascial tissue are irritated or hypertonic (over tight) spots. They are tense muscle fibers. Knots are also known as trigger points or tender points. The difference between the trigger/tender points are as follows:

 A trigger point is active in pain and most often radiating pain usually quite intense. Some examples of how they feel are sharp, stabbing, aching, throbbing or intense aching. Often times a client reports “that is the spot” or “that’s it.”

 A tender point is often a hidden and subtle. Often one does not realize there is pain until the area is pushed on or pressed on and that activates a tenderness or dull ache. Often a client comments “wow, I didn’t even know I hurt there.”

Knots can develop anywhere in the body, however; there are some common places. Here are the most common areas knots are noticed or reported:

 Neck

 Shoulders

 Low back

 IT Bands (Lateral Quads)

 Calves

 Glutes (buttocks)

What causes knots?

There are many factors and often more than one factor is the cause. Here are the general factors:

 Injuries from overuse, heavy lifting and/or repetitive motions

 Direct injury such as a break, strain, tear, twist or strain

 Tension from mental and emotional stress

 Poor posture

 Prolonged sitting or bed rest

There are many different factors and causes; I just wanted to outline the common ones. Sometimes, there are injuries that need to be medically addressed by a physician before Massage Therapy of any kind can really be maximized. Side note: There are also conditions that one is born with or develop due to heritage. I just want to acknowledge that, but it is a completely different conversation.

How does one rid themselves of muscle knots?

Here are some common approaches:

At Home

 Stretch

 Exercise (cardio, yoga, meditation..etc)

 Eat healthy

 Live in a bubble (just kidding!)

Professional Assistance

 Therapeutic/Deep Tissue/Myofascial Release/Trigger Point Massage

 Therapeutic Stretching

 Acupuncture

 Dry needling

 Physical Therapy

I honestly do not believe that anyone can be fully free of tension or muscle knots, have perfect posture or be in perfect atonement within body. We are always in motion and against gravity! Now, I do believe that the state of physical being can be controlled by choice and action. It is important that we all strive for balance in work, health, exercise and relaxation time. There are so many ways for us to do so. Massage has been viewed as being a luxury for so long, it really is not. It is an important part of taking care of self – self care.

Healthcare in the USA has changed so much and has so much going on in and around it, that many are seeking more holistic natural ways of addressing illness and physical pain. Massage Therapy is one that is climbing the charts of being greatly beneficial in reducing physical pain, easing tension and it is often reported a clearer happier state of mind accompanies regular massage.

With this all said, I have adapted pricing to be more pleasing to the budget. I offer $10 off for new clients and have permanent special rates for our Service Men & Women of our Military past and present, as well as our civil service men and women of the Police and Fire Departments.

Thank you for the privilege to serve you!!
